Unforgotten Friends
Chief

Chief was a Heinz 57, as we like to say; meaning, of unknown mixed breed.
He came to us late May of 2005 along with Shadow. (Shadow is still with us at the Rescue in Sanctuary.) They were both in bad shape at the time of their arrival, being severely malnourished, emaciated and wormy. Both recovered in a fairly short amount of time with the proper care and diet.
Based on examination of his teeth at the time of his arrival at the Rescue, it was estimated that he was 30+ years old. His joints were showing the signs of their advanced age and a hard life lived. He was put on daily supplements for the Arthritis and he got Bute to keep him as comfortable as possible.
Due to the special care he required in the way of costly supplements, it was determined that he would remain at the Rescue in Sanctuary for the rest of his days.
Chief quickly became everyone's favorite. His calm and gentle nature endeared him to those that are prone to be timid around large animals. Kids especially loved spending time with him and he loved them back.
He peacefully passed away on July, 28, 2007, surrounded by those that loved him most. While our hearts are heavy with sadness, we take comfort in knowing that he is no longer in any pain or discomfort. He will be missed by all.
Poncho
Formerly Pasqua, a Quarter Horse of unknown bloodlines. He was a Sorrel gelding with a white star.
Pasqua came to us early January '06. His owner had developed a heart condition and had surgery. He was no longer able to work and couldn't afford to feed his three horses. It became obvious to him that he could no longer give Pasqua the care he needed and deserved.
Pasqua was a very thin stud who was renamed Poncho after arriving at the rescue. He was promptly gelded, de-wormed, given all of his vaccines and a complete dental was performed. It was obvious that all he needed was a little TLC and he bounced back to health quickly. Based on an examination of his teeth at the time of his dental, it was estimated that he was at least 20 years old; quite a bit older than his owner had thought.
Poncho gained weight and filled out beautifully. Unfortunately, the week he was to begin assessment under saddle, he suddenly developed a large growth on his jaw. The x-rays showed that it was probably bone cancer. The tumor continued to grow in size, but he did not appear to be in distress over it. The decision was made to allow him to live out his natural life here at the Sanctuary as long as he continued to be comfortable.
He continued happily grazing with his pasture mates for the next several months. Then, the morning of September 18, 2006, he didn't meet me at the gate for breakfast; he couldn't walk. The cancer had spread and was now affecting his motor skills. I knew the time had come to let our dear friend go.
Although our time with Poncho was short, he was very loved and well cared for. We will never forget him or his willingness to do whatever was asked of him. We miss him very much.
