JackJack ~ Our Chief of Security
Description:
JackJack is a small brown and grey Donkey. He is approximately 5 years old and stands 11.3hh.
Background:
We purchased JackJack in April 2005 to be a guard donkey for our herd. We had been anticipating the arrival of some orphaned foals from a Rescue in Kentucky and felt that he would be useful.
Medical:
When JackJack came to the Rescue he was wormy and had 'Jack Sores', which are common among donkeys. He was wormed and the sores were treated. The sores have not returned. He is currently healthy, up to date on all his Vaccines and has a negative Coggins certificate.
Personality:
JackJack is definitely a sweet pet donkey who will eat out of your hand. He does have the instincts to chase dogs and small animals though. He halters, ties, leads, bathes and even clips, and stands for the Farrier. He was reluctant to load for a time, but now we can't KEEP him out of the trailer!!!

Rohan ~ Our Official Mascot
Description:
Rohan is a nearly 2,000 lb 4 1/2 year old gelding.
Being a Percheron/Belgian/Appaloosa/Paint, he stands over 16hh and he hasn't quit growing yet!
When he was adopted as a foal his coloring was a red roan with lots of spots and even some grey in his mane. We had no idea what he would grow up to look like. Now, he is mostly white with a few Leopard Appaloosa spots on his rump and a pink snip on his nose. He sure doesn't look anything like his baby pictures, as you can see! If I hadn't watched this guy grow up myself, I'd never believe he's the same horse pictured as a baby!
Background:
He was a former PMU Foal out of Manitoba, Canada and was rescued by Mustang-Spirit out in CA at about 6 months of age in 2003.
When I saw his picture on their website in late January 2004, it was love at first site! I knew then that baby needed me and I needed him. Rohan finally arrived here on a clear and cold moonlit winter night in February 2004. He was finally HOME! He was a gangly looking scrawney 9 month old kid with huge ears and knees! We hoped he'd grow into them, and boy, has he EVER!
Medical:
When he arrived here in Texas, it was a very cold winter. It even snowed! He came down sick right away with Transport Fever and Pneumonia. He had already suffered through a case of Strangles after arriving in CA along with a case of Ring-Worm. What a difficult start for such a sweet little boy! Already he had logged more miles by such a young age being transported across this continent than most horses do in their entire lives! Fortunately, with much love and TLC, the little guy pulled through it all and is now a big, healthy horse!
Personality:
He certainly shows no signs of the rough start he had in life. He LOVES everyone and he's everyone's favorite as you can see! We call him a "Dog in a Horse Suit". He follows us around like a puppy dog and would rather be underfoot with people than out with the other horses. His curiosity manages to get him into plenty of trouble!
Rohan spent his 3-year old Summer of 2006 with a local trainer. Being the laid back kinda guy he is, I was able to teach him to accept a saddle, bit, and rider, but he needed finishing by a Professional. Kenton Oglesby of Maypearl, TX was just the right guy for the job. His gentle methods were just what this sweet horse needed.
Rohan is a beautiful ride! Everyone, young an old, enjoys riding him. I look forward to many years of lazy days spent out on the trails together.

Shadow ~ Aged Black Appendix Gelding
Description:
Shadow is a Beautiful Black gelding with a White Star and stands 15.3 hh.
He is an Appendix ~ Thoroughbred/Quarter Horse.
Supposedly he was registered at one time, but no papers are available.
Background:
Formerly named Johnny, he came to us at the end of May of 2005 along with Chief, one of our former Sanctuary residents that passed away the summer of 2007.
They were both in bad shape at the time of their arrival, being emaciated and wormy. Both recovered in a fairly short amount of time with the proper care and diet. Shadow was reportedly trained as a Hunter/Jumper.
His reported foal date was January 1982, making this stunning boy 26 years old. Don't let his age fool you though, he can outpace all the younger horses and is a beautiful mover!
Medical:
He is in very good health, especially considering his age. He has a negative Coggins certificate and is up to date on all Vaccines.
UPDATE: January 2008 ~ The cold snap we have had has been rather hard on Shadow at his advanced age. He didn't want to drink the cold water and before we knew it he was having a bout of colic. He spent a few days at the Lone Star Equine Hospital and is now home. He is doing much better, but it is obvious that this took a lot out of him. He has dropped a little weight and isn't quite his usual self. His diet of Equine Sr. is now being supplemented with Purina's Amplify to help him gain back some of the weight he lost. We are continuing to monitor his water intake closely and will do everything in our power to prevent another episode of colic.
Also, it seems that when he lost his best friend and pasture mate, Chief, it really depressed him and he has never been quite the same. He still has not found a buddy that he feels comfortable with.
UPDATE: February 2008 - We put Shadow in with Gracie, our pregnant mare and some of the younger horses. He settled in beautifully! He seems to really like Gracie and is protective of her. He is gaining back the weight he lost.
UPDATE: March 11, 2008 - Gracie had a colt!!! Grandpa Shadow won't let either Gracie or the foal out of his sight. They have become a family!
It's nice to see him enjoying life again!
Personality:
He is the sweetest boy with kind eyes. His ground manners are excellent other than being a little pushy at times (mostly feeding time) if he thinks he can get away with it; he halters, leads, loads, bathes, and stands for the Farrier. He does NOT like to be tied tight and has been known to pull and sit back. He was very spirited under saddle and definitely needed an Intermediate to Advanced rider as he had been known to rear up slightly.

Chico

Chico ~ Standard Sicilian Donkey
Description:
Chico is a grey Standard Sicilian Donkey gelding. He stands 12hh. While he is listed as a "Companion Only", that is only because it has not been determined what hidden talents he possesses. He might possibly be able to be trained for either riding or packing.
Background:
Chico was an owner surrender. He came to us, along with his buddy Little Bit of Fire (aka Lil' Bit), a Welsh Pony, at Christmas-time 2006.
(Lil' Bit has since been adopted by his Forever Family ~ See his story on our Happy Endings page.) They were both extremely malnourished and emaciated. Their condition was so bad, that their hair was falling out!
Medical:
Chico has completely recovered and is very healthy. His coat has completely grown back in. At one time in his his life he must have been overweight, because he has a 'fallen crest' that became more pronounced as he put weight back on. It is not causing him any problems and is quite common both in overweight donkeys and even horses. The condition is considered permanent. He is up to date on all his Vaccines and has a negative Coggins certificate.
Personality:
He is an extremely gentle and sweet donkey. He always comes up to the fence to greet guests and will eat out of your hands. He is definitely a pet donkey versus a pasture guard donkey, although he does have the instincts to chase dogs and small animals. He halters, ties, leads, loaads, bathes and stands for the Farrier.

Jim

Jim ~ Aged Grey Gelding
Description:
Jim is a White Appendix - Thoroughbred/Quarter Horse.
He is a gelding in his 20's and stands 16hh.
Background:
Jim was turned over to the Rescue by his owner who had only purchased him approximately 6 months beforehand. As it turned out, he had arthritis that required costly supplements which she could not afford, so she decided the Rescue was the best place for him. We picked him up on April 16, 2007 outside of Houston. We had been told he was thin, but when we got there, it was obvious that his living conditions were less than ideal. He was in a lean-to shed that was too small for him to lay down in or even to stand up completely. He was standing in mud and his own feces, which had given him a fungus on his lower legs. He had been rubbing his sides raw on the wooden posts of his pen. His small water bucket had filthy undrinkable water in it and he was dehydrated. He was extremely thin as well, having been being fed sweet feed only; not appropriate for a horse his age.
When we took him out of his pen he was very stiff. That's when we were told that he had collapsed on his hind legs the last time he backed out of a trailer a few weeks before. He had been penned up ever since that injury, not allowing him to work out the stiffness.
Medical:
Along with being put on a quality Senior feed, he is being given Cosequin and Duralactin for his stiffness and arthritis. Bute is administerd as needed. After being able to move around freely, Jim has made remarkable progress and has not only trotted, but cantered as well. He continues to gain weight and make progress. His skin has healed and the fungus on his legs is gone. He is up to date with all his Vaccines and has a negative Coggins certificate.
Jim is not sound enough to ride.
Personality:
Although Jim is a very appreciative and sweet guy, he sometimes gets to where he doesn't want to be messed with. So he obviously has a certain amount of discomfort. He has excellent ground manners and contrary to what we were told, he is easy to catch. He definitely knows who brings him his feed! He halters, leads, loads, bathes, and stands for the Farrier. He is a very patient guy.
