Dancer - Former roping horse gets a new Forever Home
Description:
He is Sorrel gelding with some white 'roaning' on his face and front legs and stands approximately 16hh.
He is an Appendix ~ Thoroughbred/Quarter Horse. Registered with the AQHA as Dancin' Wager. (Papers available.) His foal date was 6/14/1990.
You can see him in the pictures hanging out in his new home with his best buddy, Rocky, who is being fostered by Jim & Linda G.
Background:
Dancer was placed with us by his owner. He came to us early August of 2006 in basically good health. He was previously used for many years as a Head horse in Team Roping. When he retired from that, due to Navicular Syndrome, he was used by kids for Play-Days at a local Church.
Medical:
His Navicular Syndrome is managed with supplements Cosequin and Duralactin, along with corrective egg bar shoes.
(For more information on Navicular Syndrome, click here.)
At this point he is performing at better than 90%, being ridden lightly each week and he is in excellent health.
Personality:
Dancer is sweet, gentle, and has wonderful manners; he halters, leads, ties, loads, bathes, and stands for the Farrier. He doesn't always like to be caught though; probably from all those years of only being caught when it was time to go to work. Also, he loves carrots and scratches and his buddies Rocky & Gunnar!

Rocky ~ Teenage Liver Chestnut Quarter Horse Gelding
Description:
Rocky is a Quarter Horse in his mid to late teens. He is Liver Chestnut with a white blaze and one white sock. He stands 15.3 hh.
Background:
Rocky was the first horse that I personally purchased. When I took him trail riding, he was an excellent trail horse who was very confident on the trail when it came to steep terrain, water crossings, or other obstacles. He's as sure footed as they come. Unfortunately, as is often the case, he didn't continue to be ridden as regularly as he should have been and subsequently got "cold-backed" and a bit sour.
He has been Fostered by Jim & Linda G. in Waxahachie, TX for the last few months, where he has begun getting back to work under saddle. Rocky has sent word back to us that he is VERY happy there with them and his buddies Dancer & Gunnar and he has decided to stay! Rocky is the third horse adopted by Jim & Linda from Never-E-Nuff Acres.

Chico & Tico ~ From Sale Barn Uncertainty to Paradise
Description:
Chico & Tico (Formerly known as Poncho & Lefty to us.)
Chico is a Sicilian grey donkey and Tico is a brown donkey. Both are short enough to qualify as miniatures on the larger side.
Background:
While attending the Seguin Livestock auction In April 2008 to save some horses, two adorable donkeys were run through first. They were scared to death and their fate was uncertain. Even though Never-E-Nuff Acres is specifically a Horse Rescue, we couldn't turn our backs on the long eared cousin of the horse. How could anyone resist those fuzzy ears? And those big brown eyes & quizzical faces were just TOO CUTE!!!
Usually, people want donkeys to deter coyotes on their property, but sometimes they are looking for something a little tamer. The brown one, that is the smaller of the two, was supposedly broke to ride. He is a total Luv Bug!!! The other one was a little shyer, but still very sweet.
The family that adopted the two of them together has two little boys that are very excited about the new additions to their family! The older boy, at the tender age of 5-years-old, immediately named them Chico & Tico!
When the two donkeys were turned out on 20 beautiful treed acres with a stream, they immediately began sampling the wide variety of scrumptious greens available! It is paradise for donkeys!!!
Medical:
Both donkeys were in good overall health with Negative Coggins certificates.
Personality:
Chico was definitely the more shy of the two. Tico, being broke to ride, was the sweeter and more friendly of the two. Both were extremely sweet and calm though in spite of the ordeal they had been through at auction and the long haul home.

Lil' Bit ~ Gets a Fairy Tale Home
Description:
Our dear sweet pony, Lil' Bit has found a Wonderful Forever Home! He went to his new home in Ferris, TX the first week of August 2007.
His new Mom, Ada, and her best friend Susie are spoiling him rotten already!!! He's got lots of new friends as well; two miniature donkeys, a miniature filly named Josie, several goats, dogs, cats, and even exotic birds!
He's the biggest one there, so he feels like the Big Boss instead of the Little Guy.
The third picture was taken at Christmas '07 at his new home as he happily grazed alongside his best girlfriend! The last one is Lil' Bit giving a ride to one of the Grandkids!

Starbuck

Starbuck ~ Running Free at Black Beauty Ranch
Description:
This guy is one Big Stallion! He is a beautiful dark Bay.
Even though Starbuck wasn't "Adopted" in the traditional sense, we still felt he deserved to be on our "Happy Endings" page since he found his "Forever Home". Read more about this special guy...
Background:
He originally lived and freely roamed on the Paiute Indian Reservation in NV where he had his own Band, or Family Group, that he proudly led.
Unfortuantely, approximately 40 horses of the large herd were in jeopardy of being sent to slaughter due to repeatedly wandering off of the Reservation and going into a local town. The townsfolk considered the horses to be a nuisance.
Enter a hard-working, dedicated woman named Shirley Puga. She came to their rescue just in the nick of time! She was able to raise enough funds for all 40 to be saved and safely transported off of the Reservation into Foster situations. While 20 horses headed to CA, the other 20 were shipped to TX. Starbuck and his Band (family of mares and offspring) were among those sent to TX.
Once in TX, the horses were placed in the care of a man who turned out NOT to be a nice person. It soon became evident that he was not providing quality food or enough water sufficient for a herd of this size. The horses lost weight and became very weak in a short amount of time. Not only did Starbuck suffer from dehydration and malnutrition as they all did, but he was separated from his Family Group as well.
That must have been very difficult for him to have lost everything: his home, his family, and his health. To many, it would have seemed hopeless.
Never-E-Nuff Acres was priviledged to take part in the Great Re-Rescue, as we all came to call it, on Oct. 19, 2007. Only 18 of the original 20 horses were at the location when we arrived to seize them. Those 18 were loaded up and taken to temporary holding pens. During transport, Starbuck's former Lead Mare, went down in the trailer. She was too weak to stand. Unfortunately, she was too dehydrated and malnurished to pull through. Starbuck had truly "lost" his mare, never to be reunited.
The offer was made for the mare's orphaned foal, Legacy, to come and stay at the Rescue for as long as necessary. The Rescue also ended up temporarily taking in Starbuck, likely Legacy's daddy. He has a bright future ahead of him though at Black Beauty Ranch where he was taken the day before Thanksgiving. You can see him in his temporary holding pen in the last picture above.
Medical:
During the month that Starbuck spent here at the Rescue, he was put on both Strategy and Amplify to help him gain some much needed weight. Plus he had all the fresh water and 14% Tifton hay he could eat; and boy, could he eat! He must have put on at least 100 lbs. while he was here as his ribs started quickly disappearing.
The folks at Black Beauty will continue to help him gain weight. Once he has gained enough weight to undergo the procedure, they will have him gelded. Then, after being given sufficient time to heal, he will finally be turned out to once again roam freely on the Ranch.
Personality:
While I only had Starbuck under my care for a short time, he really seemed to respond well to me. He seemed to genuinely trust me and wanted to come closer. The "wild" horse had a gentle soul after all. It was hard to let him go, but it definitely was the best thing for him. Black Beauty Ranch is such a wonderful Sanctuary where he will be safe and well cared for the rest of his life. He will once again be free to roam and happily graze in the sunshine.

Beau ~ Gets a place to call Home
Description:
Beau is a black and white Medicine Hat Paint/Quarter Horse gelding. He has one brown eye and one blue one!
Background:
He was one of the four horses that came to us in September of 2007 from a nasty Feedlot in Nevada.
He was headed for slaughter in Canada and destined to end up on someone's dinner plate in Europe or Asia. Fortunately, there were people in the right place at the right time to intervene and "bail" him and the others out.
Medical:
All four horses were a bit underweight when they arrived at the Rescue, however, Beau filled out nicely during his time with us.
Personality:
He continued to be one of the least trusting of the four that came to us. It's not surprising, given the fact that they were never really handled to begin with. Then they got sent to auction and shipped across the country to a Nevada Feedlot that smelled of "death". Only to be transported BACK across country to Texas. I wouldn't trust people either!

Fred & Ginger ~ Get to keep Dancin' Together thanks to Habitat for Horses
Description:
We are happy to announce that these two lost souls that found themselves in custody at the Ellis County Sheriff's Dept. - Animal Control are now in the capable hands of Melissa Thompson of Habitat for Horses. They are SAFE & TOGETHER!
It's hard to imagine these two being dumped like a stray dog and then the owner refusing to take responsibility for them, but that's exactly what happened.
Once public awareness of the plight of these two was raised through the Internet and Media, the outpouring of support that followed shows once again that THERE ARE NO UNWANTED HORSES!!!
The Waxahachie Daily Light printed two separate articles featured on their front page about these two special horses.
Donations can be made directly to Habitat for Horses and earmarked for "Fred & Ginger" the Blind Appy and his Mare if should desire to help with their rehabilitation and ongoing care.
Even though we were not in a position to take these two in here at Never-E-Nuff Acres, we feel privileged to have had some small share in helping them find a safe haven in their darkest hour. They were truly as sweet as can be and deserved much better!
